Most travel blogs will tell you Lisbon is great year-round. And technically, you can visit any month. It won't be dangerous, the city will still be beautiful, and the pastéis de nata will still be worth the trip.
But if you're asking whether November is the right time to visit Lisbon, whether it's the month that will give you the best version of the city, the honest answer is: probably not.
November is Lisbon's shoulder season for a reason. Rain, short days, and limited outdoor enjoyment make it a tough sell, unless you specifically prefer a quieter, cheaper, more atmospheric city experience.
What November in Lisbon actually looks like
November is one of Lisbon's rainiest months. You're not looking at constant downpour. It's more unpredictable, with grey overcast days, sudden showers, and stretches of cool, damp weather. The kind that makes outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable if you're not prepared.
The daylight situation is the bigger issue. Sunset is around 5:15 PM. That means by the time most people have finished lunch and a museum visit, it's already getting dark. Alfama is best explored on foot in natural light. Sintra's palaces and gardens lose a significant amount of their magic under a low grey sky. The Tagus River at dusk is beautiful — but dusk comes early.
Temperatures are mild by some standards: highs around 61°F (16°C), lows dropping to 52°F (11°C) in the evenings. Not freezing, but cool enough that you'll want layers every day and a proper rain jacket every time you leave the hotel.
Who should still go in November
- Prefer museums, Fado dinners, and indoor culture over outdoor sightseeing
- Want significantly fewer crowds at popular sites like Jerónimos and the castle
- Are traveling on a tighter budget, since hotels and flights are cheaper
- Don't mind grey skies and find moody weather atmospheric
- Have a fixed travel date you can't move, since it's still Lisbon
- Want to fully enjoy Sintra, where the palaces and gardens need good weather
- Are planning outdoor sightseeing as the main focus of your trip
- Want golden hour photos on the miradouros
- Are traveling with kids who need outdoor activities
- Have flexibility, because there are clearly better months
When should you go to Lisbon?
The sweet spot for Lisbon is a long one, which is part of what makes it such a compelling destination. You have almost eight months of genuinely good weather to choose from.
Lean into what the month does well. Book a Fado dinner in Alfama: the intimate, candlelit setting is made for a cool November evening. Hit the museums without the summer queues. Eat and drink well, because Lisbon's restaurant scene doesn't have an off-season. And pack a real rain jacket, not just a light layer. You'll thank yourself.
The Lisbon guide on this site was built for a November trip, so if that's your window, everything in it still applies. Just go in knowing what November is and pack accordingly. The city will still deliver.
Compare live prices for Lisbon hotels and apartments on the map below. November is low season, so rates are some of the best all year.
